Overview

J.C. Baldwin Construction is a 50-year-old civil contractor specializing in coastal and geotechnical work across California. After Josh Wagner acquired the company, he partnered with Visser Analytics to revitalize an outdated website that had little traffic and almost no domain authority. We built a substantially larger, service-area-driven site that markets the firm's coastal bluff stabilization, seawall, landslide repair, and structural underpinning capabilities to engineers, public agencies, developers, HOAs, and property owners up and down the California coastline.

The problem

With a 50-year track record and a portfolio that includes seawalls, port projects, and high-profile coastal stabilization jobs, J.C. Baldwin had reputation in spades but a digital presence that did not reflect the scope of the work. When Josh took over the company, the existing website was a small, outdated brochure with little traffic and minimal domain authority, which made it nearly impossible to win attention from the engineers, agencies, and developers who specify civil contractors online.

  • Almost No Organic Visibility. The legacy site had very little traffic and almost no domain authority, so even people searching for the exact specialties J.C. Baldwin performs were finding competitors instead.
  • California Coastline Was Not Represented. The firm serves projects from San Diego up through San Francisco, but the prior site did not communicate that geographic reach in a way search engines or prospects could pick up on.
  • Specialized Services Were Buried. Coastal bluff stabilization, seawalls, sea cave infilling, landslide repair, slope stabilization, shoring, and structural underpinning are distinct disciplines, but they were lumped together rather than given the individual depth each one needed.
  • Five Decades of Work, Few Case Studies. A 50-year project history including landmark coastal and infrastructure jobs deserved a portfolio that could win bids, not a thin sample that left visitors guessing about capabilities.
  • New Ownership, New Trajectory. Josh's acquisition was the moment to relaunch the brand digitally, signal continuity for long-time clients, and open the door to new public-agency, HOA, and developer work along the coast.

The mandate from Josh was clear. Build a website that matches the depth, geographic range, and technical credibility of an established civil contractor, and give it the SEO foundation needed to grow domain authority from a near-zero starting point.

Our solution

We rebuilt the site from the ground up around two organizing ideas. First, every specialty service should have its own dedicated page with the depth a specifying engineer expects. Second, the California coastline should be treated as a first-class part of the site map, not an afterthought.

  • Service-First Information Architecture. We built individual pages for each of J.C. Baldwin's nine core services across the Coastal and Geotechnical divisions, including coastal bluff stabilization, seawalls, seawall repair, coastal access and sea cave infilling, landslide repair, slope stabilization, shoring systems, structural underpinning and seismic retrofitting, and grading and civil construction. Each page is structured so engineers, agencies, and property owners can quickly understand scope, methodology, and fit.
  • California Coastline Service Area. A dedicated service-area section communicates that the firm works across San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Monterey, Santa Cruz, San Mateo, and San Francisco. This positions J.C. Baldwin as a true statewide coastal contractor rather than a regional player.
  • Project Portfolio That Wins Bids. We gave the project portfolio room to breathe with detailed case studies covering high-credibility work like the Del Mar seawall, Shell Beach bluff stabilization, the Port of Los Angeles, Walmart MSE wall, Home Depot, Camden Crown Valley, Century Woods, Coast HOA, Colony Cove, Martin Resorts, Planet Pacific, Point Loma WWTP, and Swami's. The portfolio is the firm's strongest sales asset and now functions like one.
  • Brand Story and Team. New About and Team sections tell the story of a 50-year contractor under new ownership, communicating continuity to long-time clients and ambition to new ones. Marketing language like "Where Land Meets the Pacific" and "Solid Ground, Built Right" anchors the brand.
  • SEO Foundation Built for Growth. Because the prior site was starting from near-zero authority, we focused on the fundamentals that compound. Clean technical SEO, location-specific pages tied to the service area, structured data, optimized metadata across the much-larger site map, and a fast, mobile-first build that gives Google something worth crawling.
  • Conversion Paths for Specifiers and Owners. Engineers and agencies need different proof than HOAs and homeowners, so the site routes both audiences toward the same Request a Quote workflow without losing the technical depth that decision-makers need to feel confident reaching out.

The process

  1. 01

    Discovery & Strategy

We started by understanding the company under new ownership and what the next decade should look like online:

  2. 02

    Information Architecture & Content Plan

We designed a site map that treats services and service areas as first-class citizens:

  3. 03

    Design & Development

We built a fast, mobile-first site that holds up to scrutiny from technical buyers:

  4. 04

    SEO Foundation

Because the legacy site had almost no authority, we built the SEO foundation to compound:

  5. 05

    Launch & Ongoing Support

We launched the relaunched site and stayed engaged for the long arc:

Outcomes

The relaunched site reframes J.C. Baldwin as the statewide coastal and geotechnical contractor that the work itself has always justified:

  • A Site That Matches a 50-Year Track Record. The new site finally reflects the scope of a half-century civil contractor. Distinct service pages, a serious project portfolio, and a clearly mapped service area replace what was previously a thin brochure presence.
  • Coast-Wide Market Positioning. With a dedicated service-area page and location-aware content covering San Diego to San Francisco, J.C. Baldwin is now positioned to compete for projects across the entire California coastline rather than being read as a Carlsbad-only firm.
  • Specialty Depth That Speaks to Specifiers. Each coastal and geotechnical service now has its own page with the depth an engineer or agency reviewer expects, which raises the floor of every first conversation and shortens the path from search to qualified inquiry.
  • Foundation to Grow Domain Authority. Starting from near-zero traffic and authority, the site is now structured with the technical SEO, internal linking, and content depth that lets new pages rank and accumulate authority over time rather than fight against a thin legacy footprint.
  • A Digital Front Door for New Ownership. The relaunch gave Josh Wagner a credible digital home for the next chapter of the company, one that signals continuity for repeat clients while opening the door to new public-agency, HOA, developer, and resort work.

TJ is on top of his game! He was able to quickly learn about our business and translate our notes and photos into a live website that will carry our company OUT of the past and INTO the future! Highly recommend.
